CONCORD, NH — Concord police are investigating an assault incident late Tuesday morning on South Main Street. Initially, the call came into police dispatch as a report of two women fighting in the area of the Theatre and South Main streets around 11:45 a.m. A tipster told dispatch the two women were on skateboards and then began fighting. “We have four 911 calls on this,” the dispatcher said. Dispatch told officers arriving another report stated one woman struck the other in the head with a skateboard, and mace or pepper spray may have been involved during the incident. Concord fire and rescue teams were also requested. Officers arrived in the area while Concord fire and rescue teams staged for police, hearing the incident was a possible shooting. One officer said the wounded party, a man, fled north on South Main Street. “He’s wearing a T-shirt and he’s totally covered in blood,” one officer stated. A man and a woman told police the man came out of an alley, jumped them, and then they attacked him with a skateboard, according to scanner chatter. The woman pepper-sprayed the man, and then he disappeared into another alley. The man stated he was punched in the face while the woman also got some of the pepper spray in her face, according to an officer. One officer reported finding a can of pepper spray, sunglasses, and a blood trail on South Main Street, near Theatre Street. The blood reportedly led to an apartment building at the corner of the intersection. An officer was seen placing tape around the crime scenes. The couple was reportedly involved in a domestic incident earlier in the day, according to police, but the incident in question was not domestic. Other officers began searching the area looking for a white man, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, maybe 6 feet tall, with brown hair, a gray beard, and a gray T-shirt. The suspect also had a significant gash wound to the head. Around 12:30 p.m., police confirmed no gun was involved in the incident. Dispatch said a witness claimed to have seen a gun during the incident, according to scanner chatter. Dispatch and officers contacted Concord Hospital to see if the suspect had arrived for treatment. Later, an officer went to the emergency room and believed the suspect might be getting treated, but could not confirm. Just past 1 p.m., New Hampshire State Police K-9 units tracked the suspect’s scent on Storrs and South Main streets. The tracking led police back to the area of Theatre and South Main streets. Around 1:30 p.m., police believed they had a suspect in the incident: A man in his late 40s who lives downtown. They also believed he was at the hospital seeking treatment.
